Get a newer 9-5! Posted by B Millar [Email] (#1109) [Profile/Gallery] (more from B Millar) on Sun, 8 Nov 2009 17:58:53 In Reply to: Time for a new (different) car, Mark Morrissey, Sun, 8 Nov 2009 17:42:40 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I had a 2001 9-5 SE V6 with 184k miles on it at this time last year. It was an excellent car but it was getting very expensive and I needed something I could trust a little bit more as I was driving more. It was okay for around town but now that I was out of the dorms commuting to school I started looking around. I found a 2004 9-5 Aero with 31k miles on it listed for $12,995. I haggled them down to $12,500 and sold my 2001 on Craigslist for $3600. It has been 11 months and 13k miles later I have seriously only done a transmission fluid flush and replaced the DI cassette, and I wouldn't hesitate to take the car on a cross-country trip tomorrow if I had to. Of course, I've replaced brakes and a battery but those are normal wear items.
I owned my 2001 9-5 for 2.5 years and spent over $5,000 in REPAIRS ALONE on it, plus the $5,000 I bought it for. So over 30 months, I was essentially paying $333 a month to drive that thing, whereas I'm only making $300 monthly car payments on the Aero! No brainer much? The insurance was a whole whopping $27 more a YEAR for the Aero.
9-5's 2004 and newer are really great cars. They're very reliable. They no longer have sludge issues (debatable, but I'm a believer), and if you get an Arc or Aero you'll pretty much never have to replace the turbo. You could get a great low-mileage '05 or '06 9-5 well within your $15k budget. Good luck!
