Some other things that I checked:
The trailer wiring appears to be quite OK actually. I found where the installer had jumped into the wiring harness, and although he did not use the proper saab plug etc, he did connect to the vehicle side of the correct plug, so basically it's all connected to the right wires at the right point, just not via the nice genuine connector.
Re ABS unit, my ABS unit did die about 18 months ago, and yes it did all sorts of crazy stuff to the dash, but after reading a lot on here about it I knew straight away what it was and got it fixed by a local equivalent of BBA Reman. It's still working fine at present.
