Hi Folks,
Many thanks for your replies thus far, all input is greatly appreciated. To cut a long story short, some judicious wiggling of the ignition switch does seem to bring the blinkers and other things back on line. So I'll go ahead and replace the switch and see how it goes, and report back.
Further info:
Bad grounds do indeed also make a lot of sense. I was not thinking along those lines, with all those computers and stuff, I tend to jump to the conclusion of a black box going bad rather than good old fashioned electrical fault finding.
This morning I cleaned and refitted both posts of the battery, removed and reinstalled all relays in the box under the bonnet, and removed, cleaned and refitted all 3 grounds near the battery. It did not have any effect, the windows/blinker/etc still died when hot and then eventually came back on after some 10+ minutes of driving.
The no-start scenario I had on a couple of occasions previously was a no-crank situation, everything powering up fine but motor not turning over. I replaced my crank sensor as a matter of preventive maintenance about 18 months ago, based on advice from this forum. Everything now seems to point toward another fault of the ignition switch perhaps, different failure mode but same component.
I will change the switch and report back. How does that work by the way? Do I have to buy a complete lock set? Or can the ignition switch be bought to suit the key I have? I'm in Australia but would like to buy from the US if possible as the local Saab spare parts pricing has gone insane. Some parts have tripled in price in the last 18 months - absurd, and a great example that pi**ing off your remaining loyal customers is not the way to return the company to the black.
Cheers
Steve
