The stated load capacity isn't that bad. I’d say that an 1150ish lb payload [~930lb+driver] is acceptable if it were true. Manuals should have a little more payload, and sedans even more. The problem is that payload is nonsense with the stock setup. There is no way the stock setup can carry anything close to the stated payload for any significant time/distance without part failures. Even just passengers can be problematic.
Not too many unibody cars can candle much more than about 1300 lb. I’m guess the 9-5 is rated about the same since you could have a linear, manual configuration with a heavy driver and get close to that 1300 lb target. 1300 lb puts one close to the limits of the tires and the axles. Some SUVs, even beefy ones have worse payloads due to heavier components, especially as you pay more for a big engine on the same frame.
Some cars are unacceptably low. For example while the Passat wagon is 1228 lb, the Jetta wagon is only 981 lb (I assume both include the driver).
It is almost fraudulent that many manufactures don’t include payload data or anyway to calculate it on the US versions of their site. Thank goodness the UK speaks English or we dumb Americans would be left in the dark. Kudos to VW for having payload listed on their US site (but shame on them for that ridiculously low Jetta payload as 4 American passengers can weigh that and they know it if they gave the Passat a more appropriate payload).
Disclaimer: Don’t all jump in and think oh, anyone who tries to put 1150ish lb in a 9-5 deserves problems cause it is not a truck. I’ve never gotten close to that including intentional test loadings done for dealers. A quick search of the BB will show many having problems with weight occasionally in the 700s and that includes me. I challenge Saab or anyone to prove scientifically that the stock 9-5 load ratings are correct. I don’t think it is even close.
