In theory custom springs might be simple, but there isn't much room once the coil starts compressing. One of the design problems might be that the 9-5 needed a taller spring so that there was more room to work with. That might make it easier to tweak the handling and load carrying while avoiding spring clash (bottoming). Also, as you get a stiffer spring you begin to lose some of the handling characteristics that made us want to drive the 9-5 in the first place. I’m not sure if the coil springs are permanently deforming. One would have to look closely at new and beat up springs, but that seems somewhat unlikely. Unfortunately, my dealer refused to let me look at my really trashed parts. The replacements sets were replaced before they got to be as bad.
