You need to mic the bore. A bore gauge can be had online for $30 or so. I found a lot of galling in cylinder #4. It was the aluminum from the piston collecting on the cylinder wall. Measuring the #4 piston revealed that it had lost a ton of material and the gap between its skirt and the cylinder wall was making the knocking noise. I still have the old piston if you want to see a pic. The ball hone will get most of the galling off the cylinder wall, and put a nice cross hatch on the wall again. The hone didn't take much material if any off the cylinder wall, but you need to clean and remeasure every few passes to make sure you aren't eating into the cylinder. Mine was still in spec for standard piston/rings after I was through honing it. Before I honed it, I called a the hone manufacturer and asked what hone to buy for my job. Ball hones come in all different varieties. Get the right one. I can take a pic of mine too if you need it.
Cylinders 1-3 were in good shape. I didn't hone or replace the rings there. Rings are expensive for this engine. $30 each hole. I installed a good used piston in #4 on re-assembly. New pistons are big bucks too. If you go the used route, make sure its the right piston. There are 3 varieties. I did however replace all the bottom end bearings.
25k later runs great, and doesn't leak or use a drop of oil!
