GM influence on a 2006 9-5

We have a 2002 aero sedan and were considering trading to a 2006 model this summer, until I read on this site that there are certain GM influences I probably would not like, beginning in 2006. Just as an example, supposedly one cannot switch to "econ" mode on the climate control. I cant wait to see the pealing plastic stuff. My jury is out on paddle shifting.
Anyway, I wonder if there is some consensus about GM-ishness on the 2006 and newer cars, and if so, perhaps I will keep the ol' girl. I hate GM influences if you cant tell. I did not care for the GM engine in my 1995 V6 NG900.
cheers,
