GM influence on a 2006 9-5 and some fun myths Posted by Herb Hirsch [Email] (#114) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Herb Hirsch) on Tue, 11 May 2010 16:56:32 In Reply to: GM influence on a 2006 9-5, schpank, Tue, 11 May 2010 16:09:00 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Whatever you attribute to a 2006 9-5 would probably apply equally to a 2007-2009; there's very little change across the final years of a 9-5.
GM did a lot of things under the covers to make the car more reliable and stronger. I've seen and am able to make comparisons having owned a 2000 9-5 AERO, and still enjoying a 2004 ARC and 2007 AERO. I'll list a few of the more notable changes. All of these are part of a 2006 or later 9-5.
1. Yes, you can put the A/C in econ mode; there's a button on the ACC for that.
2. Integrated AM/FM/XM with controls and a display you can see.
3. Sludge issues.....gone
4. An automatic transmission that never quits...and provides the same performance and economy as a manual tranny
5. Virtually every component in the front end is bigger and stronger
6. Many electrical system connectors and grounding techniques have been improved for better reliability.
7. The DIC has been engineered upwards for improved reliability (this included a recall that may have been encouraged by the NHTSA.
8. The unreliable orange relay is gone.
9. Bluetooth is available from SAAB if you want it; it's standard on the new 9-5.
10. All of the incandescent bulbs in the instrument cluster have been replaced by LED's. Generally, the LED's are maintenance-free. With the incandescent bulbs a couple of hours of labor is required to dismantle the dashboard.
11. the engine is now up to 260hp
12. NEGATIVE COMMENT: Th OEM floor mats in my 2007 9-5 AERO were garbage; I threw them out 2 weeks after I got the car and ordered quality replacements from State of Nine. I was able to color match and examine them at the Troy, MI 2007 SOC.....real quality mats that are still going strong after 44K miles.
Others on this BB could undoubtedly expand on the list. And yes, GM should have brought out the new generation 9-5 a few years ago. And yes, maybe GM should have left the SAAB 9-5 as a SAAB instead of trying to morph it into a Swedish Buick.
However, in conclusion, you're considering a used 2006 9-5. IMHO and from my 9-5 experiences you're looking at a solid and very reliable car.
Finally, I got rid of my 2000 9-5 AERO because I wanted a new car after 280K miles; I don't know what that says about GM influence.
