Front struts... Posted by MI-Roger [Email] (#882) [Profile/Gallery] (more from MI-Roger) on Mon, 17 May 2010 04:32:27 In Reply to: Ar my struts blown? HELP!, Chris, Sun, 16 May 2010 17:13:59 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I may have set the record for front struts having just replaced my factory original struts with over 270K miles on the odometer. Just because the front struts don't give obvious signs of wear out (I saw a Ford Escort on the expressway last week that nearly became airborn after hitting a bad joint because its rear shocks were totally ineffective) doesn't mean the 9-5's front struts last forever. Trust me.
My car would exhibit mild tramlining on some sections of grooved concrete prior to the strut replacement; that is now gone. Roadway noise is significantly reduced. Ride is significantly better. Handling is noticeably improved. The whole car feels like new!
Rear shocks tend to give notice of failure at around 100K miles. The front struts just keep getting progressivley weaker, but at such a low rate that it tends to go undetected. On a '99 model year vehicle it is likely the struts are the source of your problems eventhough the mileage isn't that high.
