The width of the 9-3SS and 2000 9-5 include mirrors, as they were both taken from the drawings in the sales brochures. The width of the new 9-5 was specified as a dimension in the brochure without any drawing, but I agree with you, it seems to include mirror width.
The dimensions for the BMW, Audi, and Buick were again dimensional numbers only, no drawings, but they seem to be too small to include mirror width.
Additional overhang, front and rear, increases the "crumple zones" for crash protection but almost certainly interfere with handling performance. So the new 9-5, with a overall length approximatley equal to the 7 series and A8, but with a shorter wheelbase, should be expected to offer better crash protection than the longer wheel base competition, but with diminished handling performance.
