The 2.3 litre 9000 aero engine has some, not many, but some crucial changes as it morphed into the 9-5 engine. It's not the same 9000 B234 engine like in the 9000 series cars. The 9-5 is similar to the B234 but morphed into the B235 which is shared with the Viggen which had the same exploding engines (meaning cracked pistons leading to cracked/baked cylinders, etc from low oil pressure due to a myriad of design issues GM wanted, including using a much lesser psi oil pressure pump and pick-up screen in oil sump. GM changed the famous B234 9000 engine that many believe was a cost cutting measure. The 9000 was designed and made when Saab had more control of the company, when GM took over most of the stock, they changed stuff not normally seen or understood by everyday car-buying folks. there's more to do with how a car works than just an engine obviously. The 9-5 placed the catalytic converted too close to the oil sump which fries the oil for one, and there are other issues you can search for in the performance BB section. btw, a decade or so ago ford took over volvo and jaguar and landrover, GM took saab and maybe others, don't know... I understand that volvo got away but not as quick as landrover. American big automakers needed higher end automobiles since they didn't really have any, and Saab needed more exposure in the U.S. hence the mergers to whatever degree they were. I think Saab got the short end of the stick. european cars still have more inovation and design. IMHO, yes I think GM drove Saab down. I do not think Saab would have disappeared, saab was a "yuppie car" in the late 80's and into the 90's. Peace!
