Esso XD3 Synthetic 0W-40? Posted by Gene N [Email] (#1094) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Gene N) on Mon, 16 Aug 2010 04:54:52 In Reply to: Re: Gah sludge!, EGD [Profile/Gallery] , Sun, 15 Aug 2010 21:15:58 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Esso XD3 Synthetic 0W-40 is kind of a mystery. At first glance, you would think it is just Mobil 0W-40 with the Esso international brand applied. The data sheet says that it uses a full synthetic polyalphaolefin (PAO) as the basestock, which makes it a Group IV synthetic like Mobil 1. But, when you look at the ratings, it is not ACEA A3/B3 approved oil, or ACEA anything for that matter. A lot of the approvals seem to be diesel approvals. Also on the Esso website, it does not include Esso XD3 Synthetic 0W-40 in its ILSAC GF-4 approval list.
It could just be a question of testing/marking/marketing, but my guess is that this is a completely different oil additive mix designed for trucks used in extreme cold. It might not be that great for preventing sludge in 9-5's.
On the other hand the people on "Bob is the oil guy" web site claim it is better than Mobil 1 0W-40, so who knows?
