IMHO, it's a little like keeping fish in an aquarium . . . it's a matter of running out the clock, delaying the kidney failure long enough so that the fish dies of something else first. $500 is way too much to pay for something that may or may not be a problem; it's like a $50,000 physical exam for an 80yr old, the cost and physical invasiveness of the exams may well do more harm to the subject. Chances are that the subject would be happier without the hassle, trama and worry.
IMHO, this sludge/debris clogging oil passage ways issue is quite widespread among almost all carmakers that use modern high specific-output engines, given the high combustion temperature and modern patterns of driving/oil changes. Almost all cars (including our Saabs) do not have enough of the stuff to kill the engines before they get abandoned for other reasons. People with half-clogged arteries function very normal, and most people have some clogs in their arteries; bypass surgeries are not needed until 90-95% clogging.
I'm very intrigued by the other poster's suggestion about adding an oil pressure guage. I'm ordering mine; for less than $100, it's an inexpensive peace of mind that can continuously monitor the situation.
