and a picture like Les showed adds to the uncertainty. Makes me want to drop the pan on my wife's wagon with 95K on it, despite having changed the oil every 5K miles, using M1 0/40 or 10/40. My indy wants $500 to do the job, draining the engine overnight. Don't know that I want to spring for that, or spend the time on my back in the driveway doing it myself.
Then I think of the 2001 9-5 sedan my daughter's boyfriend drives. He's probably the 3rd owner and has had the car about a year. It has 210,000 miles on it and the oil change history is unknown. I have no idea what PCV version he has, but it's not PCV 6. I found out yesterday that he hasn't even been using the right oil. His last change, done by his brother, was basic Mobil 1 10/30 that is API SM rated, but only ACEA A1/B1. Other than that, who knows?
His turbo is headed south (seals, I think) and the a/c is dead, but the car basically seems OK. He's using some oil, but I think it's a combo of leaks and oil getting past the turbo. Considering an unknown history and that it has 210K miles on it, this isn't bad. And it makes you wonder about the sludge issue.
Just something to ponder.
