Bought the car at 55k km in 2004. Used Castrol 0W-30 at 10k km intervals up to 110k km when I started using the XD3 0W-40. PCV 6 was installed at 131k. Pan was dropped at 140k. The pickup was about maybe 10% blocked at that time (not very thick), and that's likely the first time it was looked at. After that I cut down to 8k oil change interval.
At about 195k I put in a new GT17 turbo. I was also fighting a slow coolant leak at this time - never did track it down.
At 205k a heater hose blew on the highway about 2 miles from home - bing bong and engine temp in the red. Kept adding water and nursed it home watching the temp gauge. Replaced water pump, thermostat, and rad shortly thereafter.
It's at 230k now and of course is getting fresh oil. The head is off as the headgasket is shot - it's been slowly leaking water into the cylinders for a long time now.
The oil pan this time was pretty clean. Any 'gunk' appeared to be all stuck to the oil pickup. It's rock hard coffee grounds - I had to scrape it off the screen with a screwdriver - it's been soaking in paint thinner overnight now.
I don't know that I can blame the oil for this. This engine has had a bit of a tough life lately with the HG leak etc.
The one thing I did see is some hardened black crusty bits (that look similar to what was on the pickup) around the inner edge of the oil pan. I wonder if that 518 sealer can harden that way if it gets covered with oil?
