Peter,
I had the car in the shop a few months ago (3-4 months ago) and actually only two years since I had all boots replaced and repacked. So when the car was in the shop this winter there was no grease residue. So the torn (inner) boot could not have been ejecting grease more than 3-4 months at most. it's a tear through a third of the boot, nothing hanging loose or flapping though.
I thought about how often people bring their car in for repairs (the generic motorist) and how most wait until the wheels fall off, figuratively, until they take it in. Then I thought about the relative lack of loose wheels and stranded cars on our highways. :) By this reasoning, I figured I had at least a year before it started becoming a serious issue.
Seriously though, I have no idea how fast a boot can degrade. It sounds like you have a better idea though. I live in an urban environment so the car doesn't see much dirt, gravel roads.
Do you know of any band aid method? To say inject grease into the boot and glue it up instead of having to get to it the old fashioned way? Again, I need it to last for 25K tops without grinding out on me.
Thanks for your time.
