Turbo blew-can using non synthetic oil cause that

I have a 2002 9-5 that only has 55K miles on it. In March of 2010 I had my first oil change ever at a national chain (before that always serviced at the dealer). In June of 2010 out of nowhere black smoke was pouring out of my car as I was driving home from work. I took it to the closest service station I trust as dealer was too far away. The turbo had to be replaced and it cost a fortune. I was always suspicious that the oil change I had 3 months prior had something to do with it but I was told no.
I'm a single women and I don't know much about cars but I do know that synthetic oil is the protocol for my car. I took the car back to the same chain to replace a broken headlight today and figured I might as well get an oil change while I was there. So they are about to change my oil and go over everything with me and I realize they did not put synthetic oil in the car last year and are about to do the same thing. They admitted it.
Is it possible that by not putting synthetic oil in the car last year that it cause the turbo to fail 3 months later?
