I4 pre 2006 has the LPT Garette (sp) turbo that will coke up under 100% normal conditions and fail due to design issues on the turbo and the car. Even if synthetic, etc. V6 (I think all 9-5) have the LPT Garette. I just replaced one in a 2001 wagon with 140k. Areo turbos much better and post 2006 (inclusive).
What some shops don't know is that the Oil Filter needs to be pre loaded for turbos. If not done the turbo can run dry for a bit (actually a minute or two) and cause issues. Also, switching from non-synthetic to synthetic has been know to dislodge build ups and cause issues. It is not unheard of for the LPTs to fail at 50k, but a bit early. The only way to know it is the turbo for sure is to remove the air intake at the turbo and check for end play and left and right play. If some, turbo is done. This is about a 5-10 minute test. I had the same thing happen where I pulled out of an oil change place and it started to spew smoke, but it sealed up and I ran it for another 40k before it got too bad..... No way to know if they screwed it up or not.
DIY turbo replacement is about $300-$400 for a good rebuilt turbo and some time to take it out and put back. Indy cost is about $1000-$1200. Don't know what dealer would be but I would guess $1500+ since they would use a 100% new turbo.
