I wonder if it maybe matters more which specific tires? The combination that our 9-5 came with of Dunlops on the front + Pirelli P6 on the rear was pretty horrible. The P6 was mediocre in rain, but the Dunlops were atrocious. I could feel the front come loose in wet on the highway at speeds I wouldn't think twice of in the c900 with worn NRH2's...
I'm skeptical of the tire pattern on the Nokian H and V, but the claims are (and independent testing seems to support this) that they are still a superior tire in wet weather... sometimes what works is non-intuitive... anyway the bullet points on the nokian site for the V are (in order):
- excellent wet grip
- high speed tire
- quiet driving experience
- lower fuel consumption
so does this constitute a LRR tire? I know the prius crowd likes Nokians (the eNTYRE model specifically, probably because it is all season, and why bother with anything high performance on a prius?)... so they must be fairly LRR, but eNTYRE is hardly a performance product... H, V, and Z have patterns that look to be lower rolling resistance (smooth central bands), but that might not be the whole story...
anyway, LRR is low on my priorities (like tire wear and price, 2 things Nokian summers do not excel at)... I'm just wondering how much the poor experiences with LRR tires is correlated to LRR vs just crappy tires... maybe LRR is worse for all seasons? particularly in winter? most of the best winter tires are directional + not at all LRR...
