From my experience, the radio can handle an extended removal from the car without needing a Tech 2.
Here's what is going on. As an anti-theft measure, the radio is "married" to the car. This is what the Tech 2 does. This prevents a radio that is not properly "divorced" from "marrying" another car.
With me so far?
If you wanted to sell the radio from your car, you have to get it "divorced" using the Tech 2 device with Saab software. Then that radio can be "married" to another car (I'm not sure if one car can have multiple radio "partners", though. You'd think it shouldn't be possible, but...).
And, on the flip side, if you bought a properly divorced radio, you'd need to have a Tech 2 Marry it to your car.
It is possible to divorce a radio that wasn't, but it involves changing the car's electronically-stored VIN to the VIN of the car the radio came from, divorcing the radio, then changing the VIN back, and marrying the radio.
The same process has to be done with the CD changer for the trunk.
But as I said at the top, these radios can handle extended removals from the car. As long as it is put back in the same car, you shouldn't have any problems. I've had mine out more times than I want to think about, and never had an issue.
