I don't have any of my car paperwork with me at work to confirm a time-period, but if I have my independent fix something, buying the part THROUGH him, he'll warranty the part and the labor. I'm pretty sure it's 6 or 12 months. If I bring my own part and have him install it, he won't.
If you've already switched shops, I'd press hard to have them cover the labor. And if they don't, tell us how you feel on Yelp!.
