Owner of 1999 95 SE 2.3lpt. Past owner of 2000 Odyssey (112K miles - accident), 2004 Odyssey (260K miles - leaking HG), and now 2012 Odyssey (18K miles).
Yes, I'd rather drive sedans, and SAABs, if I could. Our daughters share the SAAB at school. My only concern is it's not at home and it's got 197K on it - but well preserved thanks to this board.
Some Odysseys have had problems with transmissions, but I have observed three things: 1) people post problems, not no-problem 'normal'; 2) some of the Honda issues come from the 'appliance' attitude of owners; and 3) a number of 'transmission' problems may have been mis-diagnosed (or ignored until real damage resulted). I changed out a motor mount and sensor on our 2004 at about 180K and solved an apparent transmission CEL. The 2004 had original trans at 260K when we traded in with apparent leaking head gasket (I did not have time to fix myself). 2012 model is nice, but all of the vans (including other choices out there) are bigger than they used to be with more features that can go wrong.
Because of the appliance mentality a CPO might be a better bet than private party, but we bought new because of high used car prices. Two items to consider: TPMS makes running winter tire/wheel combos harder than on older cars, and Honda engines are all interference designs, so changing timing belt appropriately is a must.
Wish SAAB had been here so I could get a 2013 9-5 wagon!
