Topped off the coolant reservoir this morning with about 1.5 gal of clean water. Car started up perfectly and ran fine. Temp gauge worked as it always has, started at cold and edged its way up to smack dab in the middle then remained there. I kept topping off every couple of miles on my way to the service center.
So I think I may have gotten lucky. There were no signs of any engine damage I could sense. I drive my car about 500 miles each week so we're pretty close she and I.
In retrospect, it was a bit foolish to proceed without topping off regularly. But I could swear the leak is (was) between the reservoir and the bypass valve with little or no leakage from the engine block. Either way I should have played it much safer. My guess could have been an expensive gamble.
Much as I'm annoyed at Saab's demise, I love my 9-5 and would rather keep her well into 200k miles (150k currently). It's simply not worth the price of buying anything else right now IMHO. You don't get that much more car ... for (relatively speaking) a LOT more $$$ out of your pocket which I prefer to use for other things like flying and sailing.
Should have some definitive word from the service shop tomorrow. They're backed up today. In the meantime, I have a coolant bypass valve on its way to me that I purchased on eBay.
Anyhow, just some words to the wise here if anyone finds this thread in retrospect. Top off the coolant system at each SID warning if you try the "drive it home" method.
