I don't disagree with you, but the general populace doesn't really care. As long as they know how fast they're going (not that they look at it...) and what station the radio is on, they're fine with it.
People think everything should be "perfect", that no needle should be out of position or vary, things that just aren't possible. So then you get gauges with a "neutral zone" so the needle never leaves the "N" until it's almost too late, which keeps the perfectionists happy and out of dealership waiting rooms. The next logical step is to do away with the gauge altogether...
Of course, modern cars need to track all of that anyway, so it's all there in ones and zeros someplace on a bus. Why not have optional instrument panels (they're all going to be LCD panels very soon, anyway...) that you can either select or have "installed" by a dealer.
I often thought that the Saab SID should have been recofigurable into a more useful (and friendly) set of gauges. this could have been something already built into the SID firmware that just needed a dealership to release by setting a bit someplace. Give them a $200 "programming" charge for the owner, and everyone is happy.
