The shaft collar or spacer doesn't attach to the spring. it just sits between the bottom of the spring and the top of the spring stop/ring welded to the shock. It goes around the shock but its not holding the spring up. The collar could probably even be a bit larger than the diameter of the shock thus the need for lock-tite if you use a split shaft collar. After market spacers function exactly the same way though some are one-piece which necessitates taking the shock off and removing the spring to slip them over the shock.
