it's really a tip of the iceberg thing!
coming from c900's (and we live in the rustbelt), I was amazed how thin the 9-5 metal is and quick it will rust right through. There is a difference in how the 9-5 and c900 is protected from rust. The 9-5 metal is very galvinized, but it's hard to make paint stick to galvanized metal, so the paint literally flakes off once it is compromised. That dog leg between the door and fender on my car had maybe a 1/8" bubble on one edge, and when I took off the liner and went at it with a screwdriver, the paint flaked right off over about 3"x3" over the 3-D corner there! Most of that area was rusted under the loose paint (surface rust film), and there was a small area of heavier rust and perforation about 3/8" in diameter! I just POR15'd it and fixed it up. We'll see how that lasts, but that has worked pretty well on the c900's... the c900's have less galvinization, but the most ridiculously good paint job ever. the factory baked on epoxy primer is insanely tenacious! A chip in it does not spread until the rust gets into the metal under the paint. Nothing can break the surface hold of the original c900 paint. Once it is gone, the metal is thick and seems to last a bit longer.
I do think the fender liners in the 9-5 are not a bad thing. I did have a few spots of surface rust to address when I took mine off, but the fenders were not bad. The only thing that stinks are the stupid plastic nuts on studs - the studs break very easily. They must have been able to figure out a better system than that one!
FWIW, I oil spray all my cars every year. Makes a difference.
I envy all the Californians here!
