Being a rustbelter, I always try to see how other vehicles I own rust (I normally keep cars over the long haul). Apart from the dog leg in front of the rear tires, the similar leg in back of the front wheels are an issue. Fuel filler cap - rust starts from inside. Anything on the underside is fair game. I also zapped high pressure lines on the steering rack with corrosion inhibitor - quite buried but alarmingly rusty.
The best case scenario is to strip the 4 fender liners off and treat all areas accordingly once every 3-5 yrs. If you see a bubble not caused by a stone chip or surface edge deterioration- there is almost always perforation, albeit sometimes difficult to see with the human eye when the paint is removed.
