I have an ’03 Aero with 119K miles on it. I’m the first owner and I take very good care of the car. I plan to keep it forever. I noticed some bubbling down low in front of the rear wheels. A few years ago the movement of the plastic valence had broken the paint and I had a very minor cosmetic repair to fix that. But by this year it was bubbling again on both sides. Removing the plastic wheel well covers, both sides, revealed complete perforation down low on the wheel well in front of each wheel. The plastic liner holds in dirt and salt in the gap and over 10 years it had eaten through. This was allowing some salty water to enter the body below the doors, but that’s rust-proofed enough that it didn’t rust.

I sprang for serious, high-quality body work to fix this. Almost $1,000/side but worth it. They cut out all the rust, welded in new stainless steel plates, seam sealer, primer, paint, rubbery coating and some wax inside each lower panel. When car is reduced to dust in 50 years those wheel wells will still be solid.

So the moral of the story is, if you see some paint bubbling down there on an older 9-5 take off the wheel liner and take a look. It could be much worse than you think, and you want to catch it and fix it to ensure long life for your Saab. You may not have to do an over-the-top job like I did, but remove the rust and make sure you fit some sort of cover panel over the hole to stop salt from entering down low.
