Hi Kim,
Yes that could very well be the cable at the starter melting the insulation off. Or the starter itself getting done in. Yes the long hard starts will create alot of heat at the starter.
I think it is very likely the dealer will find an ignition switch issue with your car it sounds like the +15 power is not be transmitted thru the ignition switch when in the start position. The blinking abs/tcs lights are a hint to an issue like that.
I have been able to start a 9-5 or 9-3 with this problem by jumping power from a +30(powered all the time) fuse to one of the +15 (powered in start and run) fuses to get the car to start.
If I was trying this in your car I would probably jump from fuse 1(brake lights a +30) to fuse 21 (radio, onstar). I have jumper wires with ends on them so that I can remove the fuses and install the jumper but you can usually strip the end off a wire and jam it in with the fuse(not highly recommended) or try to get them pushed in some with just the bare wire. You will want to put them in the top end of where the fuse goes because that is the power side from your battery. I only tell you this because after the smoke you saw you may have an even harder time starting it tomorrow than your current hard starting. Good Luck, Bernie at George Riggin Specialty Automotive
