Unless the guides are broken, the majority of the change in the tensioner position is from the chain stretching. I would recommend pulling the valve cover and looking at the chain and the cam sprockets before you start anything. On the 1999 9-5 SE I purchased with 171K miles, the engine was making a racket up in the timing cover area, and I planned to roll in a new chain. Once I got the valve cover off, I found the chain rollers were no longer perpendicular to the links (off by about 5 degrees), and the two cam sprockets showed signs of significant wear. I switched to Plan B, and dropped the engine replaced the timing chain, guides and sprockets, then changed the balance shaft chain and guides for good measure. That was in 2009 and 38K miles later the engine is still quiet. Dropping the engine also allowed me to clean the sump and replace some other wear items.
