between belt and chain. No doubt a belt is less expensive than a chain, as are the (molded alloy or machined soft steel) toothed pulleys vs. the (precisely machined hardened steel) sprockets. Also, lower inertia, and the readily designed water pump drive off the back of the toothed belt. But the belt adds (at least two) extra penetrations for oil to leak from, adds length to the engine, requires some kind of access to allow for belt removal (cynics may argue that the manufacturers don't do that), and certainly on the more enthusiast oriented vehicles portrays an image of cheapness, being maintenance prone, and more subject to catastrophic failure. A well engineered chain drive can last the life of the car if the oil is changed on schedule.
