When I drain the engines hot so that some of the oil is coming out from the oil cooler when filter is removed, I fill the engine with 4.5q which brings it up a tad above the max mark but not above the plastic tip and up on the metal rod.
Since these engines are consuming oil like no tomorrow, it is not a big deal to be a little over filled but 5.7 or 5.5 quart, that's too much.
Yes, it might be a lot of confusion since some of the books/programs talk about the V6 engine alone even though you have specified the 4 cyl engine and some of the data talk about with or without emptied oil cooler and a quickie lube tech might not be able to see the difference since the don't have time to look at the dip stick when they are done.
Volvo have a discrepancy with the new 3.2L engine where the booklet state about a 1q too little than the engine takes so cars leave with 1q under-filled if you don't have time to pull up the dipstick after the oil change.
I was quite surprised the first ones I got in and filled by the book just to find out it was only at the Min mark. Now Volvo have come out with a bulletin saying the numbers are wrong and what they should be filled with.
