Nice write up!
The last fuel pump I replaced was on the 2000 SAAB 9-5 Aero. The whole assembly and fuel filter under the car.
It started right up after replacement. This was probably because the fuel pump died with more then half of the fuel remaining in the gas tank. Trying to start the SAAB after that, maybe 20 times, helped with the pressure relief.
Maybe just filling up the tank with gas, through normal gas cap route and with a couple of pre filled gas containers, would help with pressurizing tha gas tank again.
