1999-2003 9-5 models are known to have a leak in the rear corner where the head, block and timing cover meet on the passenger side just above the tensioner groved pulley and just below the timing chain tensioner. This has been a chronic problem with my 2003 Aero for a few years now.
What happens is that the oil over time leaks onto the belt and mainly the grooved tensioner pulley causing it to soften, and in my case, ate away the grooves and the belt eventually slid off especially during hard acceleration.
What I did was spray degreaser on the affected area and then power washed it clean. There wil be some to tell you that it's the timing chain tensioner seal and some will say the crankshaft and oil pump seal and oring. I've done them all and still have the problem.
According to two Indys that I have good relationships with the only remededy in my case is to remove the engine to reseal it correctly. Which means "big dollars." You have a 2001 which means you may be able to retorque or replace the head bolts if your are lucky.
I just keep degreasing and power washing it every so often to stay ahead of it. If you power wash it be careful and try not to get water in the alternator which sits down under the tensioner.
