Bruce, I'm not sure what problem you experienced as mine may have been different.
My 2005 9-5 Aero experienced a CEL due to leak on hose connected to turbo bypass valve. I changed the hose and waited for it reset by itself. After a couple days, I gave up and reset with my scan reader.
I agree that had I not repaired the problem, the CEL would have re-illuminated.
On a different model car I own, I usually reset the CEL before inspection. It usually stays off for a day or so, long enough to get past the emissions test.
