Studded tires... Posted by Snowmobile [Email] (#686) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Snowmobile) on Sun, 19 Oct 2014 18:17:37 In Reply to: I don't know what I'd buy?, ScottA, Fri, 17 Oct 2014 22:18:18 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
It really depends on your climate. If your climate is fairly mild, all seasons will be great (depending on the specific all season - I have no confindence that our RE970's will do anything but slide uncontrollably on ice). If you get a lot of ice, and especially when combined with hills, studs make a huge difference. Modern studs are designed to shock absorb and do not wreck the roads much at all (the data usually cited wrt road damage comes from the 1970's - much has changed since then!).
The Subarus are pretty good in snow, but more so for going forward than for stopping, and more so for the clearance... I've driven an older outback through a blizzard in the rockies, and it was better going forward than our c900's but worse stopping. The clearance was the biggest thing with the snow falling so fast you could not see the tracks of the car in front of you!
Overall, I've been pretty disappointed with the 9-5 in snow (coming from c900's) and we use top of the line snow tires. We get around fine, but in comparison to the 1989 c900 with 10 year old Nokian winter tires, no ABS (and no TCS)... the 9-5 with brand new Nokian winter tires and TCS on just can't corner as well accelerate as fast or stop as fast... it's very noticeable! But then I've also driven c900's back to back, one with top of the line nokian unstudded tires and the other with 10year old worn out studded nokians... the studded car drove circles around the unstudded car even though the tires were at end of life vs brand new... the performance difference is huge! So one can get around slowly and carefully on all seasons, but one has more margin with winter tires, and even more with studs...
