We were going back and forth on this the other day, I think you have come to a logical conclusion. Glad you slept on it.
I have lived in the Cascades with my F150 4x4, and believe me, I needed it, chains and all, and I think you will be served best by one of the newer Subarus, last 3-4 years if you can swing it. Good balance of economy, durability and capability in that environ.
Since you had a fondness for the Saab wagon, the Outback may be the best choice. If you are a really tall dude, the Forester may provide more headroom. You might start by looking in AutoTrader in the SE US. These cars do not have rust and the resale of Subies here is weak, so you may find a gem.
I think it would be cheaper to operate than any Volvo. We have a 2010 S80 (wife) and I dont expect it will be cheap to keep. Better than any of her Audi quattros which cost me a fortune after 50k.
Let us know what you wind up with, and I am glad to see you knew when to say when.
I like the Saabs but this is my last, next spring...I am not going to put 2500.00 worth of suspension in a 3500.00 car.
Best Wishes,
Bill in GA.
