I would avoid welding. Posted by Snowmobile [Email] (#686) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Snowmobile) on Thu, 8 Jan 2015 06:42:45 In Reply to: Re: Catalytic Converter, Les_H, Thu, 8 Jan 2015 06:12:38 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
If you can get a drop in replacement, welding generic stuff will only cause you more pain down the road. Bosal is kind of a generic, but it usually will bolt right up. I say usually because it really depends on the specific Bosal part and the specific parts already in your exhaust, and I have not tried a Bosal cat in a 9-5. I have however used a Bosal cat in a c900 and it was close but not a perfect drop in - in this case, the length and flanges were fine, but the width of the can's flange was enough that it rattled against the heat shield unless I lowered it which was very finicky to do without leaks... bottom line, good to check before going forward, and if there is little difference in cost, I would for sure get OEM. Try various parts suppliers to see if there are any in stock anywhere, and for a cat, honestly, if they will let you do it, try a junk yard. These things don't fail that often and I would expect a used OEM cat to last longer than a new generic... but it used to be that some locations wouldn't let you install a used cat (or allow bone yards to sell them). Worth a try though!!
fwiw, the bosal on our c900's is now on it's 5th or 6th year and the car still fairly easily passes emissions.
I would look on Genuine Saab (the place everyone here goes for konis and spacers, not the one in Sweden) for exhaust parts also. Not sure if they have cats in stock.
good luck!
