The only reason for CA approved is if they have "paid the piper" to get their catalytic converter approved for CARB standard and gotten the magic number stamped into the sheet metal.
That's why I'm not a bit impressed with the approved ones since they are just as small coffee can style ones as the non approved.
It is a complete and utter failure of when the regulating bodies have no clue what they regulated about but someone has to pay them.
The V6 is extra sensitive since it passes so much gasoline through the engine together with oil from the leaking turbo seals so it easily drowns the cat and as smaller the cat is, the shorter the life span.
Even the big genuine cat have a tough time on an older V6 engine but at least it has a lot more substrate inside to weather it out for a longer period of time.
Volvo 960 is another car that have a tough time with small after market cats due to the large amount of gasoline going through the engine.
