This was mostly true of the 9-3SS, which at launch included software programmed to define the oil change interval. I say "mostly" because Castrol 0W30 was also available and met the same requirement (GM LL 25 A/B). Presumably there were other oils that met the requirement, but they were not widely available in the USA.
Without taking anything away from M1 0W40, which is a very fine oil, its high shear viscosity is on the thin side for a 40 weight; it is near the very minimum level allowable by the ACEA A3/B3 specification (which is the relevant specification for the 4 cylinder 9-5); Castrol 0W30 is right at the minimum.
Note that dexos 1 supplants the GM LL 25 A spec, and dexos 2 spec supplants the GM LL 25 A/B. The only oil I've ever seen in the US was labelled dexos 2 was a six pack of GM labelled oil sold at the SOC 13 (Iowa) parts tent. It was 5W30.
