Yes it can be traced back to the engine's antiquity, but only indirectly to emissions rules.
Remember that a company like GM establishes internal standards for everything from the shape of the seat to the number of angels dancing on the hood emblem. Among those is fuel economy. Back in the day Saab started with a sound premise, did their best, and let the chips fall where they may. But GM stuck them with a set of numbers that ultimately required a massive reduction in engine friction. Newer engines could hit their numbers thanks to more modern design, like roller tappets. Saab couldn't do that with their engine. Instead, they applied a suite of "improvements" that included low tension piston rings. That led to increased blowby that corrupted the oil products of combustion. Water is a major product of combustion, and it combines with another, oxides of nitrogen, to make acid. The high oil temperatures are meant to keep the water in its vapor state so that the PCV can get it out of there.
Said PCV is a book unto itself.
In either case, the higher oil temperature doesn't affect the DIC that much, I don't think.
