Why so many alternators?

Original alternator was replaced at 110k on my grey 2002 2.3t due to bearings rattling. That one was rattling at 133k so again replaced. Long time saab shop using stethoscope says current rattling that comes and goes is due to alternator bearings now with 166k. Former dealer did last two replacements. All I can figure is they used poorly rebuilt units.
