Some power flushes will do a backflush, using the tranny cooler lines but reversing the direction that the pump provides - which circulates fluid through the torque converter. This can dislodge sediment, especially if the particular tranny has an internal filter.
So as mentioned I like to run a bottle of amsoil auto tranny flush then drain vis the pan - this removes built up sediment and things like varnish that can build up over time. Then use the output line to pump out fluid, replacing in increments.
But in looking at the fluid in my Saab, it does a lot of city traffic past few years, the fluid after 60k miles is still a good hue of red so it's pretty good fluid and has an effective cooling system. I used toyota 4 last time, now I have a case of Mobil 3309 but may hold off flushing based on the appearance of the fluid.
