I've posted about this before but now it's getting silly. When driving at night with light switch in fully clockwise position, suddenly all the dash lights go out, instruments, center stack, everything. The exterior lights are unaffected. The dash lights go out for maybe a second and come back on. I've driven on 500 mile road trips with the lights on for two or three hours and it won't do this at all. My wife takes the car on a 20 minute drive and it does it ten times. I've tried replacing the light switch to no avail. I've also replaced the SID with no affect, although that did fix a similarly annoying random seat belt chime. And no, it's not the night panel switch.
I've heard others say to replace the instrument cluster. How hard is that? Does the whole dash have to come out, or just the steering wheel and part of the dash in front of the driver. Would reprogramming be required or is it just plug 'n' play? The car is an '05 Aero Wagon.
Diagnosing this IMO requires judicial installation of electrical metering equipment to catch the car in the act. The Mrs isn't keen on driving a rolling test test lab.
Any suggestions?
Thanks.
Doug
