WOW! THAT doesn't sound good. Isn't the pump housing and Bypass Valve made out of PVC? I'll be aware.
Bobc: sorry I forgot to click 'notification of thread post' so just getting back here. Yes, 2 problems (I beleive)
1) Coolant temp indicator in dash never got above the 8 o'clock position despite an 8hr drive to LA AND Tech2 read coolant temp no more than about 170* at running temp.
AND
2) No Heat
What I did:
1) Replaced thermostat(and doing so is a whole other thread story)---dash gauge now about 9 0'clock AND Tech2 coolant temp up to around 190* at running temp
2) Took out bypass valve, inspection was fine, Manual vacuum testing showed the valve moving ok, new vacuum lines were ok and had vacuum off the intake manifold... Checked voltage in at valve solenoid, ok, checked ohms between pins on solenoid-->30+ ohms = no internal short. I didn't have a second hand to activate the solenoid from the ACC control AND be under the hood to simultaneously check voltage so just bypassed the valve as shown and VIOLA! HEAT.
