Speed dependent whine from front passenger area

When the temps drop, my '05 9-5 Aero manual seems to develop a lovely whine. BUT it only happens between 25mph and 55mph. At least I think it stops at 55, maybe I just can't hear it. Either way, it happened with my summer tires when the temps got cold enough, and it's happening with my winter tires as well. If I'm in motion and put it in neutral and rev it up, the whine is constant. Doesn't seem to happen below 25mph at all. Recent new items include a waterpump last October, wheel bearings and brakes a few years ago, crankshaft seal/oil pump o-ring, serpentine belt (the longer one) with new pulleys. I'm quite confident it's coming from the front passenger side. Doesn't matter if I turn the wheel either way. Anyone ever seen/heard this before? Gas mileage has been fine, power is fine, everything seems good. Of course it's -2 right now and my garage isn't heated so I'm not to eager to poke around out there, but I will if this could be something dangerous.
A related question I have is about running the car with the front wheels off the ground. I can't remember where I read this, but they were adamant about NOT driving the front wheels with them off the ground. Said it wound ruin the CV joints or something. Of course now I can't find any info on that, so maybe I misread something. Any harm in me doing that to try to track down this sound? Obviously I would make sure the car was secure so I don't send it through the back of my garage.
