Today we are going to cut the balance chain and replace the main bearings.
Before I cut the chain, just a sanity check ...
- the balance chain is visible next to the #1 main bearing, is that right? I don't want to cut the timing chain by mistake!
- I intend to keep tension on the chain and pull it out the front side of the engine to minimize the risk of it bunching up and jamming.
- will it pull out? I assume that I have to rotate the engine to feed it out ... and if so I'll need to rotate the engine counterclockwise to feed it out the front side. Do I have that right?
- I intend to use a Dremel and cut the pins.
- its a tight squeeze. I hate the idea of all that abrasive metallic dust right there near the bearing. I'll flush it as best I can.
decent weather here today, not blistering hot for a change. and a little cloudy to make it even cooler. Couldn't ask for a better car work day!
The main bearings, we are pros now. We practiced with the donor car and made a custom PVC "pusher tool" to facilitate rolling out the upper half of the bearing. should go smoothly
