Buttoned her up (again) and we are happy for now. The nasty bottom end thump from the main bearing is gone. The rattly raspy sound is gone. all that remains is what I presume is piston slap.
what we did:
- cut the balance chain, and there is no noticeable vibration in the engine. it seems a bit more lively in fact.
- replaced all of the main bearings, They were beat up, but none had spun. We had a hell of a time replacing #1 main bearing but eventually prevailed.
Stethoscope reveals that the engine is mostly quiet everywhere except around the #4 exhaust manifold bolt. there is light tinny sound that is in time with crank rotation. I am assuming this is "piston slap", which I failed to diagnose earlier! (Jimmy, you were right on!)
Mostly a success so far, there was quite a cacophony of noises in this car. I think we will do the pistons (or at least #4) as a winter project.
#3 min bearings and scratched up thrust washer:
the full set of bearings, with the PVC pusher tool and the modified bearing shell
I used a dremel to cut the balance chanin. I tried a side cutter but could only get 1/2 way through but had to finish with the dremel. I really recommend using the cutter if you can.
