Rattling noise is most probably not from the oil pump but something on the serpentine belt or timing/balance chain.
Possible noise sources on serpentine belt route:
- A/C compressor clutch bearing
- belt pulleys (one on the tensioner and two or one additional depending on belt length)
- alternator bearings
- crank pulley - not tightened screw, or damaged harmonic balancer (thin rubber between inner and outside part of the pulley)
- water pump
- power steering pump
- tensioner not giving proper force (loose belt)
You have to take off the belt and run the engine without it - if the noise disappears then search within the points above, if not then almost for sure it comes from balance/timing chain.
PS. For big pump circlip there is only one trick: you can simply buy a proper pliers! :) Size - J4 fits perfectly (J4 is straight, J41 is 90° bend - those are Knipex markings, other suppliers could have different ones, usually there is a given circlip diameter range). Tools for circlips have forged or hardened tips, shaped to avoid slipping. That's why in this case I would recommend to buy the proper tool instead of making our own. If it breaks/slips then flying circlip could be dangerous. I do not deny fun of making own tools but in this particular case good tool makes removing this circlip so safe&easy (5 seconds). You will love it! :D
