Sincerest thanks to all who posted in this thread. Your insights and advice was all very helpful. It was the A/C Compressor! On the advice of a friend, I bypassed the A/C Compressor by installing a short serpentine belt ( Dayco 5060715 71.5"). Sure enough, there was no more ugly sound! The short belt runs still allows all the accessories to function. My engine has only one idler pulley, so the fit is perfect. So this allows me time to save my pennies for a new A/C compressor, or to try and figure out if replacing the bearing will address the issue. My understanding is that it can be done without removing the compressor or evacuating the coolant. the trick is to find a press strong enough to push out the old bearing, and press in the new one.
